Tokyo's The Watanabes
Saturday, April 11, 2015
The Watanabes are an international indie folk pop band performing and recording in Tokyo, fronted by two British brothers on guitar and vocals, an American keyboardist and a Japanese rhythm section. The group began life in the orange-laden prefecture of Ehime, and named themselves Watanabe in tribute to the warm and friendly people of the region, whilst also alluding to The Smiths. The initial inspiration however came from Toru Watanabe, the slightly troubled and over nostalgic protagonist in Haruki Murakami's novel, Norwegian Wood.

Three years later, the band packed up and shifted to Tokyo in search of new inspiration and regular trains, where they began work on their debut album ‘Independent Social Power’. The album caught the attention of Japanese indie music magazine Cookie Scene, as well as the BBC, who described their work as “pure Indie, with floating verses and catchy choruses”.

On the day before the release party of their second album, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. Filled with a desire to support their adopted homeland, the band have organised and performed in many charity events in aid of Tohoku, and recently visited Fukushima to help build a playground alongside NPO Playground of Hope. The trip was documented in the shape of a collaborative music video, which will be used to promote the charity, and The Watanabes’ new single Make Things Better. The band’s fundraising efforts have been praised both by Japanese national newspaper Mainichi Shimbun, and Time Out Tokyo, who described them as a band with “more heart than ego”.

Their recently released track "There's Something Wrong" has been creeping up the Jamsterdam Top 10 countdown. Tune in at 10am and midnight Toronto time to hear the 10 best tracks you've never heard.

Madlyn - Kiss Me Goodbye
Monday, March 23, 2015
Born into an artistic family, MadLyn began performing at age 3 and has been passionate about entertaining audiences ever since. Growing up in Southern California, she would begin to train her powerful vocals with a wide range of influences including Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, and Billy Joel. She tragically lost her mother to breast cancer when she was just 13, and after that began to immerse herself completely in songwriting and pop music. She later made the choice to honor her mother Madelyn, by taking on her name.Artistically choosing to drop the "e," she would be known as MadLyn, in loving tribute to her mother.

After deferring her acceptance into the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study songwriting,MadLyn was cast in her first feature film, "Elena Undone," which premiered at Outfest in 2010. In addition to playing a supporting character in the movie, MadLyn wrote and recorded "Suddenly," an original song that was featured in the film and on its soundtrack.

Years of developing her craft have now led MadLyn to writing songs for other artists, including European pop sensation, Suzanna Lubrano, recording the title track for the film "Wheels," appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! singing background vocals for bands like Youngblood Hawke, and recording vocals on the latest Jared Leto / Thirty Seconds to Mars album, "LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS." MadLyn has also co-written with some of the music industry's most prestigious songwriters including the legendary Billy Steinberg and Ken Hirsch.

MadLyn performs on a regular basis at various venues throughout the US, entertaining audiences both as a solo vocal/piano performer and with her other awesome band members. Her original music combines honest and self-aware songwriting along with her quirky piano playing pop sensibilities, and her covers of classics and modern music always includes her own style and interpretation. MadLyn is the creator & host of the ongoing breast cancer fundraising music event, "The Siren Song," and released her first official single and music video “Kiss Me Goodbye” on February 17th 2015. - MusikandFilm.com

Meet Jayesslee
Thursday, October 30, 2014
Meet Jayesslee…. The two girls are Janice and Sonia. In 2008 the duo discovered the world of YouTube. Fascinated by the concept of connecting with an unseen audience all over the world, they created their first account under the name "Jayesslee". The name was their attempt to be clever - fusing both of their initials and spelling it out. Jayesslee's first video was uploaded in their messy bedroom, doubtful that anybody would take notice. However the subscribers steadily increased over a year and it wasn't until 2009 when the two saw a sudden boost in followers after their viral hit cover of Tamia's "Officially Missing You" (currently over 12 million hits). In 2010 they packed their bags and flew to LA for the duo's first ever debut concert. Since then, they have travelled numerous parts of the world such as the USA, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand performing headlining shows and meeting their amazing fans. The duo recently completed their first headlining Asia tour in 2012 spanning 8 cities to sold out shows in Singapore with more than 3,500 fans coming out to see them. Janice and Sonia have made various radio/television appearances throughout asia on popular programs such as "E! News Asia", "Channel V" and the "MTV show". - Asian YouTube Musicians
